There are many myths regarding creativity which I want to dispel first –
The idea that there is a segregation between people who are creative and people who are not creative is totally rubbish.
There is also a myth going around our popular culture right now and that is “left brain people vs. right brain people” it’s an idea that if people get damage to the left hemisphere of the brain then the right hemisphere takes over that and makes them more creative. Again totally rubbish.
In reality all of the brain is actually used while when creative inspiration moments takes place in brain. What happens is when an idea is being generated the new connections gets formed between the networks of neurons in the brain, both between the left hemisphere and right hemisphere..
Now there are slight differences between what the left hemisphere and right hemisphere do, Actually everyone is both hemisphere brain person, and can use both hemispheres to generate ideas, even if you don’t consider yourself to be creative as compare to others.
But what exactly the creativity is ?
A lot of people think it’s generating an idea. Well, the actual definition of creativity is along the lines of producing a new idea which has value to someone. It could be a social value, artistic value, monetary value and therefore people gets emotional when they see the results of someone’s creativity. But generating idea isn’t enough to be creative. You actually need to execute on that idea because ideas are fleeting moments. Ideas happen spontaneously and vanish if you don’t do anything with them.
If you set creative challenge for someone the first thing that going to come into their mind are memories. If you push it further then they will come with an ordinary idea. And they know that their ordinary idea going to work because the idea’s are similar to memories. If you tell them that we know these ideas and it has already worked in past and we need to think of something that’s different then that can be quite uncomfortable for a lot of people because at that point brain’s kind of thought I’ve given you an idea therefore I am going to shutoff now.
If you again push it further it again will starts pushing ideas into new territories. And this is where connections get formed in the brain between ideas and memories that didn’t exist previously. Something that has value that didn’t exist previously.
